The Indian Visual media linked TRP Scam has been assuming some serious proportions, with the Crime Branch of the Mumbai Police has reportedly made 11 arrests so far. While no one would ever wish to justify and stand behind the perpetrators of the so-called TRP Scam but the fact also remains that there may no room whatsoever for any witch-hunting too, in this highly fragile case. In fact, the Law of the Land must always prevail. However, it is strongly felt that the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting should completely “banish” the display of any advertising/sponsored commercial break/s at the countrywide TV news channels, at least for six months or till the relevant court of law decides the matter, whichever is earlier. Let all these ‘BREAKING NEWS’ centric news channels, most of which never fail to claim to be showing some ‘exclusive’ videos for their viewers solely on “SABSE PEHLE HAM” basis, fend for themselves. Let their learned ‘viewers’ form any considered “opinion” about them actually based on the ‘quality and contents’ of their respective news reports. Why not have an ‘impartial and independent’ mechanism of rating their ‘popularity and acceptability’ among the general public? Truly speaking, the very concept of the allegedly stage-managed “TRP” should be given some quick burial once and for all. More importantly, the ‘operations’ of our TV News Channels must be brought under the control of one single independent authority instead of the multiple agencies like BARC, NBA, NBCC etc, as is the case now. Mind you, too many cooks spoil the broth.
