Airlines collect 769 million from baggage fees

first_imgFigures released by the US Department of Transportation reveal moves by airlines to charge for checked baggage has paid off.Revenues from checked baggage rose by 33 per cent in the first quarter of this year as compared to 2009, the airline industry making $769 million, reported USA Today.In an attempt to make up for recent declining revenue, airlines have taken to charging for services that have traditionally been included in ticket price, pulling in the biggest revenue from checked baggage charges.Charging $25 for one checked in bag, Delta Air Lines received the largest revenue from baggage fees, making $218 million. Despite this increase, airlines took in one per cent less from ancillary fees when compared to the same period last year.The figures indicate that travelers are prepared to pay for checked baggage but are less willing to pay other ancillary costs such as changing flights or buying frequent flier award miles.
